VIDEO. This Rennes bar makes the best mojito in France (and it’s great art)

With or without alcohol the mojito is the star of the summer. Always fresh and served with simplicity, this cocktail has found its way from Cuba his champion of France and he is from Rennes: Ludovic Bretel, Mixologist and employee of Le Mabilay cocktail bar restaurant.

The new “Señor Mojito” won. the National Best Mojito Havana Contest, organized in Paris, in the hiding place of the Cuba Compagnie Café. The theme imposed on all candidates during this 2022 edition was “Courchevel vs. Saint-Tropez”.

Just recovered from his emotions, Ludovic welcomed Bretel News Rennes for a tutorial recipe (and tasting) held at the Mabilay Terrace.

The recipe for the first mojito…

Following the recipe for the traditional white rum, mint, lime, sparkling water mojito is not enough to become a French champion. “We had to take risks and bring both surprising products presenting a cocktail that is pleasing to the eye”, sums up the bartender from Rennes, already winner 2019.

Here everyone is ingredients used in mixologist recipe:

  • basil leaves
  • Cuban rum
  • Green Chartreuse
  • Green Apple Syrup
  • lime juice
  • ice cubes
  • Organic tonic water
  • Pine Juice Candy Emulsion

This first Mojito, prepared by Ludovic Bretel, is now part of the cocktail menu from Mabilay to Rennes. It is preferable to taste it on the spot, as some products are difficult to obtain, notably the green chartreuse and the emulsion of pine sap candies that form the white dome over the glass.

A second recipe, even more surprisedalso let Ludovic Bretel win the title “Best Havana Mojito”.

…and the Red Mojito recipe

After Courchevel, head south and towards the port of Saint-Tropez, titled the French Champion’s second Mojito “Shining Night”. Great feature that will make mojito purists jump: the cocktail is colored red.

Ludovic Bretel assumes: “You have to take risks. So to add a touch of glamor I added spices with ginger beer, Herbs de Provence and I added edible flower petals. »

Here everyone is ingredients used in Glamorous Night:

  • Sprigs of thyme and rosemary
  • Cuban rum
  • Strawberry juice with herbs de Provence
  • lime juice
  • A liqueur made from blackberry, raspberry and wild blackberry
  • ice cubes
  • Ginger ale
  • pepper
  • Edible flower petals

It is again difficult to find all the ingredients to prepare this cocktail at home. But is knowing a bar owned by the reigning French mojito champion really useful? Everyone will form their own opinion!
