Peugeot has access to your odometer to charge you for rent overages

Peugeot and Opel are launching long-term rental (LLD) offers for the electric cars e-208, Corsa-e and Mokka-e. The special feature (and, as far as we know, a novelty): the manufacturers have access to the kilometers driven by the drivers in order to bill them monthly.

Opel Corsa-e

Opel and Peugeot, two manufacturers belonging to the Stellantis Group, have been offering an unprecedented long-term rental (LLD) offer since last week. Instead of a mileage limit over several years, Peugeot and Opel set a monthly limit! For example, Peugeot offered its e-208 at the beginning of the year for 149 euros per month over a period of 36 months with a maximum of 30,000 kilometers. At the end of the rental, the customer has to pay a surcharge if he has exceeded 30,000 kilometers. But with the new offer from the Stellantis Group, the calculation method is completely different and innovative..

Builders have remote access to the meter

Peugeot is now offering its e-208 for 150 euros per month, this time for 24 months, including 500 km per month. In addition, each kilometer costs 7 cents. Initially, we thought Peugeot would calculate the extra kilometers at the end of the 24-month lease and beyond 12,000 kilometers (500 km times 24 months), as is normally the case, based on a mileage reading.

But as a Stellantis representative told us, the additional kilometers are billed monthly, as soon as the turnover of 500 kilometers is exceeded. And for this Peugeot and Opel use the connectivity of e-208, Corsa-e and Mokka-e. These cars are all equipped with a SIM card that allows activating the emergency call, but also the connected functions (MyPeugeot and myOpel) such as switching on the air conditioning remotely. It is this SIM card that makes it possible to track the kilometers traveled by the driver.

At Opel, the lease for the Mokka-e and Corsa-e is slightly different, as the term is 36 months. The mileage limit is the same, which is 500 km per month before it starts billing at 7 cents per extra mile.

With the driver’s consent

According to Stellantis, this is the first time that this functionality (reporting of kilometers driven) will be activated in the company’s private vehicles. and the driver must accept this condition. It could a priori Go through an explicit agreement mentioned on the car’s infotainment screen. Otherwise, if the driver refuses, we will assume that the rental must be terminated.

This condition (monthly mileage) completely changes the situation with the usual rental offers, since at that time it was possible to drive a lot in certain months (e.g. in the summer) and leave the car in the garage at certain times. But with this new networked rental offer, holidays will inevitably become more expensive.
