Sony has formalized a new virtual reality headset called the PlayStation VR2. It will be an accessory designed for the PlayStation 5. While waiting for the launch, which a priori is expected no earlier than 2023, we take stock of the information and rumors about it.
In February 2021, Sony surprised everyone by providing the first details about the future PlayStation VR headset. The accessory that uses virtual reality to enhance video game immersion is associated with the PlayStation 5 – a console that’s still difficult to get your hands on several months after its launch. Almost a year later, Sony gave it a name at CES 2022: the successor to PlayStation VR is called… PlayStation VR2.
If virtual reality is still geared towards a niche audience, Sony is using the encouraging launch of the first PlayStation VR – selling 5 million units – to further push the technology in the right direction. Success will necessarily come through a catalog of quality games, a point that was missing from the first generation. In this point, the new helmet can already count on exclusivity horizon call of the mountain.
While waiting for the release of the new PlayStation VR, here’s what we know about it. Between the information shared by Sony and the first rumors, its contours are emerging.
What is the name of the new PlayStation VR?
Sony isn’t the most creative manufacturer when it comes to naming their products. Which explains why the successor to PlayStation VR will simply be called PlayStation VR2. In this sense, the helmet respects the nomenclature that has been in place since the very first console.
The name of the controllers associated with the PlayStation VR2 is a bit more original: they will be called PS VR2 Sense, in reference to the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller.
What is the design of the PlayStation VR2?
Sony has not yet revealed the design of the PlayStation VR2. We can expect a futuristic look following that of the PS5 (and the first PlayStation VR). We also imagine that the look combining white and black will be a part of it.
Then again, we know what the PS VR2 Sense looks like.
What are the features of PlayStation VR2?
In its initial statement, Sony was content to say that the future PlayStation VR ” will benefit from gigantic advances in performance and interactivity “. The manufacturer is aiming for several points of improvement: a single cable to connect to the console, a better visual experience and new controllers that integrate technologies introduced on the DualSense.
In an article published on May 10, 2021, the specialist site UploadVR shared several leaks about the headset from reliable sources. They were confirmed in a press release published by Sony on January 4, 2022.
The new PS VR is therefore based on:
- An OLED screen;
- A resolution of 4000 x 2040 pixels (ie 2000 x 2040 per eye) – versus 1920 x 1080 pixels for the first generation;
- A refresh rate of 90/120 Hz;
- A wheel to adjust the placement of the lenses (better adjustment to the interpupillary distance, specific to each user);
- A foveal rendering;
- A field of view of 110 degrees (compared to 100 for the first PlayStation VR);
- HDR Compatibility.
Foveal Rendering, which is already used in the HTC Vive Pro Eye, is a display optimization technique based on eye recognition. It aims to improve the rendering of the elements that catch the eye by sacrificing the exterior – without the user realizing it. It allows to offer more beautiful graphics while saving resources.
In terms of motion detection, the PlayStation VR2 does not require an external PlayStation camera. The sensors will be integrated: three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer, infrared proximity sensor and four cameras to monitor the helmet and controllers.
Finally, the PlayStation VR2 will have a microphone to which you can connect headphones.
What are the features of PlayStation VR2?
To further improve immersion, Sony promises ” new sensory properties “. They relate to eye tracking, headset-generated vibrations, and 3D audio.” For example, players will be able to feel a character’s pulse quickening in moments of high tension, a crunching sensation when objects pass close to their character’s head, or even the boost of a vehicle gaining speed “, states the multinational. Gaze tracking can actually be translated into in-game commands.
In a press release published on its blog on July 26, Sony gave some details about the headphones’ features:
- The ability to quickly change settings (brightness, etc.) from the control center;
- A “Cinema” mode to play 2D games on a big screen of 1920×1080 pixels;
- A “See Through” mode that uses the cameras present on the outside of the helmet to model the real world in the virtual environment (handy for looking for a physical object without removing the helmet);
- The ability to define a play area in your living room by drawing boundaries on the floor with the controller (when you pass them, the helmet tells us and shows the real world);
- A “streaming” mode to film yourself while you play (the face is embedded at the bottom of the screen).
Note that these features are not new to the virtual reality world. Sony has been taking inspiration from what Oculus has been doing for a number of years.
How is the PlayStation VR2 connected to the PS5?
The PlayStation VR2 won’t multiply the cables: it simply needs to be connected to the PlayStation 5 via the USB-C port on the front of the console. An excellent point for installation.
What are the features of the PS VR2 Sense controllers?
The PS VR2 Sense controllers were featured in a topic published on PlayStation Blog on March 18th, 2021. Still equipped with motion detection, they leave the PlayStation Move stick format for ergonomics closer to the shape of the hand (two bullets). They are reminiscent of the controllers that came with the Oculus Quest 2 – segment reference.
The controllers could be the main selling point of PlayStation VR for PS5. Sony uses certain features of the DualSense to increase immersion. We therefore find the adaptive triggers (integration of a tension when we press it, the strength of which can be adjusted by the studios) and the haptic feedback (finer vibrations). The manufacturer also mentions finger contact detection (for interactions without pressing a button) via a capacitive sensor.
The PS VR2 Sense features a rechargeable battery via a USB-C connector.
Here is the layout of the PS VR2 Sense buttons :
|right joystick||left joystick|
Action buttons (round / cross)
Action Buttons (Triangle/Square)
What is the PlayStation VR2 Catalog?
At the moment, Sony has only formalized one game for PlayStation VR2: horizon call of the mountain. It presents itself as a showcase, with an immersion in a universe with an incredible artistic direction.
It is currently unclear whether current VR titles will be backwards compatible. In this regard, we remind you that the first PlayStation VR works on PS5 through a free adapter that must be requested from Sony.
In any case, the future PlayStation VR will be a flagship game such as Half-Life: Alyx Convince owners of a PlayStation 5.
were also confirmed :
- Resident Evil Village ;
- Resident Evil 4 ;
- The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2 ;
- Nobody’s heaven.
Release date and price of PlayStation VR2
” The development of our new VR system is far from complete, so it will not be released in 2021 Sony spoke of a possible release date. The purchase will have to wait until 2022 at the earliest. According to a leak signed by Bloomberg, the Japanese company would be aiming for the end of the year, a good time to launch a new product. This would be two years after the launch of the PS5.
As for the price, keep in mind that the first PlayStation VR was launched for €400. Its successor should cost at least as much, knowing full well that a PS5 – depending on the model 400 or 500 euros – is required for it to work. Upon arrival, it will be a significant investment for those concerned.
