The new electric compact from the Chinese manufacturer MG Motor, expected for autumn 2022, reveals its silhouette a little more and opens its pre-order campaign.
The former British manufacturer MG Motor, which now belongs to the Chinese giant SAIC, presented a new, 100 percent electric compact sedan with the MG4 a few weeks ago. Its full specs are yet to be confirmed, but we know a bit more about its style.
“MG Motor has been developing innovative cars for almost a century [ses] Customers. And that too in the current era of 100% electric vehicles. (…) With this guiding principle in mind, we have integrated our global design studios – the SAIC Design Center in Shanghai and the Advanced Design Studio in London.”said Shao Jingfeng, director of global design at SAIC Motor.
To stand out, the MG4 includes an original signature with thin headlights and upward-sloping turn signals. The LED headlights for high and low beam form six vertical bands. The sculpted hood falls over a closed grille with sharp lines, and the front spoiler sits at the front of the car. The style extends right down to the 172 LED taillights design, which is an interesting design and we’re curious to see if the top light lines remain.
In addition, their design increases the aerodynamic downforce, which is initiated by the two-part roof spoiler. The two-tone orange and black emphasize the dynamics of the body.
MG also states that the MG4 Electric will be available in seven colors: Pebble Black, Dover White, Medal Silver, Andes Grey, Diamond Red, Brighton Blue and Fizzy Orange.
MG also reveals the passenger compartment of its MG4 by presenting a refined interior. A priori there are six control buttons on the steering wheel and two joysticks. The onboard instruments are all digitally displayed on a screen that appears to be 7 inches. The floating center console, which should only contain the shifter, handbrake controls and inductive charging, would be topped by a 12-inch infotainment screen. Below that are seven direct access controls, but there are obviously no separate climate controls. Shame. There are also two USB ports for connectivity.
As a reminder, the MG4 will inaugurate a new MSP (Modular Scalable Platform) modular platform for electric vehicles. According to the manufacturer, this architecture offers advantages in terms of flexibility, space optimization and weight savings. The electric compact will be equipped with two traction chains at market launch. A 125 kW (170 hp) engine is powered by a 51 kWh battery for 350 km of autonomy (WLTP cycle), while a second version with a 150 kW (204 hp) engine and a 64 kWh Battery is offered 450 km of autonomy. The charging power of this version is increased to 135 kW, ie 35 minutes to go from 10 to 80% battery capacity.
Finally, MG announces that pre-reservations for the MG4 Electric are now open on www.mgmotor.fr. In France, the call price for the entry-level version with a 51 kWh battery will be less than 30,000 euros. The first 500 pre-orderers receive a customer benefit of €500 with a household charging cable (220 V – EU plug) worth €268 and a Chargemap charging card with a credit of €300.
