Adria Matrix Axess 650 DC profile test: a great classic revisited – Le Monde du Camping-Car

In 2022, the Slovenian manufacturer has completely revised its Matrix Axess series. Among its four low drop-down beds, the 650 DC combines a central bed and an opposite lounge at 7.29 m. At a time when mid-bed sections of less than 7.00m occupy a growing place in the French market, Adria does not neglect its safe bets with slightly larger dimensions. And with the combination of a central bed, a living room opposite and a walk-through bathroom at 7.29 m, the Matrix 650 DC remains one of the strong references in the catalogue.

Available from €63,650 in the Axess version, this profile on the Citroën Jumper seduces with its modern look. The body design is clean and is characterized by the aluminum rocker panels, the sloping rear panel with integrated taillights and LED lights, and a front cap with flowing and rounded lines. On the road it can rely on a 140hp engine and its driving is easy, as we could judge after driving a few hundred kilometers along the roads that run along the D-Day landing beaches in Calvados.

Handy and well equipped

Despite the 2.30 m overhang, maneuvers are easy thanks to the reversing camera. The wide windshield and the double mirror rear-view mirrors offer excellent visibility and reinforce the driving pleasure, which is very real, especially since this model is properly equipped in terms of driving aids, comfort and safety.

Manufactured with a reputation for reliability, it is based on a construction utilizing polyester for the outer skin, expanded polystyrene for the roof and walls, and extruded polystyrene under the floor. The reinforcement framework remains in wood. The presence of a 13 cm high technical double floor increases the storage capacity and offers numerous advantages in terms of thermal insulation and antifreeze protection of the equipment. This technical solution also allows the development of a flat floor and facilitates movement from the cabin to the bedroom.

Bright room

On board, Adria optimizes space to offer maximum comfort. Starting with the bedroom. It offers a central bed of respectable dimensions (150×190 cm) benefiting from a 13 cm thick mattress on a slatted base. Even if it is 1m high, a step on each side facilitates access to the bed. In this cozy space we will appreciate the bedside tables, the neat treatment of the backlit headboard, the two large wardrobes with curved doors (with integrated USB port underneath) and the wall units. A cupboard is conveniently located at the foot of the bed. We regret the reduced passage at the foot where we only have 18cm to pass on the bathroom side. However, the space can be increased by 12 cm by sliding the bed base with lifting head. Two large side windows and a transparent skylight ensure brightness and ventilation. A pleated curtain isolates the bedroom for privacy.

Variable geometry bathrooms

The toilet area is very stylishly designed and combines two opposite compartments. Dominated by a skylight, the first houses a well-proportioned shower (60 x 70 cm), despite the wheel arch being a small step. The second combines toilet and sink. The absence of a bay allows the installation of a partitioned bathroom cabinet and mirror. Ventilation wasn’t sacrificed, however, as evidenced by the transparent skylight. As usual, the two compartments can be connected by folding down the door to the toilet and the bedroom to form a large transverse room that is insulated all round. It is also possible to create a parental suite by opening the sliding door of the sleeping area and folding down that of the bathroom.

Kitchen: functional and practical

The kitchen also benefits from high-quality workmanship. It shines with generous storage space in the form of drawers and overhead cabinets in the lower part. It shows a functional and spacious space, equipped with a deep rectangular sink, a 3-burner stove, an extractor hood and a suitable worktop (60 x 27 cm). And when needed, simply fold down the sink and stove guards to increase surface area. The large capacity fridge (142L) is directly opposite. Above is a very practical cupboard. The presence of a window and a skylight provides brightness and ventilation. When it comes to decoration, the contrast between dark worktops and wood and matt white furniture is very trendy.

A table for 5 guests

Another key center of interest aboard the Matrix Axess 650 DC is the two-bench face-to-face lounge. The one on the left is almost 100 cm long and can accommodate two people in addition to one passenger on the 70 cm wide bench seat on the right side and the two rotating cabin seats. A total of five guests can be seated in comfortable seats around a large table (75 x 84.5 cm) that swivels and bisects for easy movement. The seats with magnetic backrest (practical) can easily be converted into seats facing the road.

A motorhome with a pleasant and friendly interior atmosphere

We appreciate the presence of the opening skyroof, which enhances the natural light provided by a side window. As for the atmosphere, it benefits from a grey/beige bi-material upholstery with decorative stitching in perfect harmony with the beautiful curves and the color of the matt white furniture. The electrically operated fold-down bed is large (120 x 195 cm) and offers space for two people. By removing the seat backs and without touching the cabin seats, the bed lowers to about a meter from the floor. The ceiling height of 70 cm allows you to remain seated without your head touching the ceiling.

But the advantage of the Matrix Axess 650 DC is also its large storage capacity. In addition to those in the passenger compartment, the main reserve is in the luggage compartment with a maximum payload of 200 kg (manufacturer information), especially since it is equipped with storage rings and storage niches.
